...Edwardian Jackal Podcast: Dicentium (S1E1)...

As this is supposed to be a blog about books-on-occasion. Here a dear friend of mine and I discuss a post over at io9.com that caught our attention. Mr. Eric and I take matters of Dragonlance seriously, so this was our cue to go into depth about the possibility of Dragonlance being the next fantasy film franchise. Enjoy! ...Kitten...the Encore...and Bol Scott...

We were at the Tryst.  If you hang a left past the longer bar, keep going, and past the door.  There's a grotto on the far end, where the tables end.  There's too much light.  The blues and purple swaths of light are everywhere.  Shadows are impossible to interpret.  But the light in the grotto is yellow.  I only want to stare at my drink.  It's a tart little thing, made from something the bartender pulled out when he saw me.  It was called Zin Giba.  "A lemongrass apertif."  He had to yell because it's just too damn loud.  It's funny because everyone is saying it's too loud, but we put up with it.  I can take the trite Euro-shit.  Then the DJ wises up and starts playing some Kitten.

He's playing it along with something familiar, I think it's Bobby Digital (RZA).  It works, but I'm concentrating on Kitten's Chloe Caidez.  "I like the way that you walk / and maybe tonight / I could take you home / and if it's alright / we could dance in the white light / back in the punk rock club / it's like it's 1963 / and the girls all dance / but I'm feeling like a refuge".  The floor didn't let up like I thought.  Usually when I hear something I like, the floor clears out.  Because they are all a bunch of cocks.

Chinatown.  I remember the name.  Too loud to think, but I pulled that one out.

I finally stare over at Bol.  He shaved his head before we came out here.  He had scars as a child, at least a few.  Hair didn't grow over the gnarled white skin.  He grimaced at something.  It was some heavy chick.  He hated that.  I mean, he hated it and everyone knew it although he never said it.  It was about as close to bigotry Bol would ever get to.  He never said a fucking thing about it - but anyone that knew him that look said enough.  It said 'I have no respect for you, you are less than an animal'.  It was brutal and I questioned why I hung out with him.  He looked over at me and nodded with his chin to my drink, "How is it?"  It was all motion.

I liked it, but not tonight.  It was too hot and I was too irritable.  Sweet liquers didn't sit well with me then.  I squeezed my eyes and gave the mas o menos sign with my shoulders.  He understood and passed me some of his Jameson.  It was better for my mood.  I took a long sip and handed it back.  He smiled his crooked his smile.  His blue shell colored tie wagging with his movements.  He go nervous at the clubs.  I keep forgetting to ask him about that.

James, Schaze, Bol and I came, but only the last two were still at our seats.  We expected James was at the bathroom trying to score.  The dark hallway was perfect to getting something.  Schaze took off, like he always does, as soon as we walked down the stairs.  Why does he bother coming with us?  Then he gets made if we leave him anywhere.  So, we go on Schaze patrol each club.  It was tiring.  By the end of the night we want to kick him off the top of Ghostbar.

The two of stare at the elevated club dancers.  They are tall things in black strips.  Dancing for a living without taking off their clothes.  Shit.  I wonder what part of the thirty dollar cover are they getting from us tonight.  The DJ deserves it.  He's hit the right enough notes by knowing about Kitten.

I've caught myself staring at the images.google wall at Chloe.  Last year Master's and she provides enough of a distraction for me to keep going.  I even heard the song from Marvin and Tammi as I stared at her one night.  I listen to the 60s on 6 on SiriusXM on Saturday nights if we don't go out.  I drink like a fish on those nights. Bad deal.  I just want to get involved with anyone until I get out of this fucking place.  I'm sick of college and I promise myself I will not return to this cocoon ever again.  We're too coddled these days and college is an extension of the playground.  Just give me that god damned paper so I can move on.  Chloe gets me through the promise of one day being a man on his own feet and own dime.

Dad would agree with me.  But he doesn't give a shit.  As long as I stay in school he doesn't care that I blow through the allowance at this clip.  Fucking Vegas is a series of clubs and drinking, with only gambling on occasion.  My Dad says it's changed quite a bit.

The waterfall next to me is drowned out by the thump-thump of bass.  The water is angrily stirring below.  Up from here the Wynn shines like gold.

Kitten ends.  Damn it.  Now it's Deorro.  A rain of synth.  I actually like this electro.  It's rudimentary and not ironic.  A few girls are staring at Bol and I.  He hasn't noticed.  Good.  I'll be able to get my pics.  One of them is a blond with dark highlights under the top of hair.  She has dark eyes.  Lots of liner.  She's going for a bit of the Avril.  No worries.  Her lips are cherry pink.  That I especially like.

I motion them to come over, keeping eye contact with the blond, although I think the brunette is the one that likes me.  No brunettes, hon.  I only have a hard-on for the lead singer of Kitten right now.  Bol is surprised when he turns around.

They are looking for drinks, and I think we look like money. Funny.  Little do they know, we're broke.  But there is a credit card.  Seed money to see if we score tonight.  If James comes back with some pills, we may be in business.

They are looking for drinks, we are looking for tail.  We're just using each other.  It's Vegas.  I down the rest of the lemongrass and hold up a hand for the server.  The song changes again.  The girls' name, the blond, is Sophie.  The brunette is Sarah.  I'll forget both by tomorrow night, more than likely.  I take a napkin and write down something.  Hate to say I'm still thinking of Ms. Chaidez, but here I am.  I tell Sophie it's for her and she is ecstatic.  Sarah is a wall after that and the rest of the night.  I don't fee bad where I think I should.

Bol is pissed, since he doesn't score.

/ it's like a show of raven tress / don't want to say crows / don't want to turn you off / but there's something that I love / all along your dark contours /

/ the grey eyes that don't care / we're a lot a like / it's not so much but I know nothing else / we're all torment for feeling something, anything at all /

/ it's something to get lost in / something that's not secure / the lips of hue and cry / their red and dark and not meant for anyone /

/ the banal is the enemy / that's what they don't get / I get cigarettes / I get parcels with naughty things / and I wrote poetry because I don't care who reads it /

/ I would lie to say I don't have one obsession / it's a creature that seduces with haunting moves / it squeezes into black hose and writhes on stage / it is a call like no other / it is of something for better days / when I am well beyond this all /

...Bang Bang...21may14...

Her eyes leveled at me, uncommonly steady.  She had pulled on her collar moments before, as if readying herself of the drama I was about to unleash.  The grey wool jacket, with large black buttons.  They were overtly large.  They had to be ironic.  Weren't we done with that?  With irony?

"So?"

She had to beat me to the punch in an attempt to deflate.  Her blue eyes penetrated, easily - but it was a ploy.  Like most women she believed she had one over on me.  Little did she know that I had what many men don't: a backbone.

"So?  All you ever do is take.  You are a taker.  You use everyone like toilet paper.  You are ungrateful.  You are unwilling.  You belittle because it comes so easy to you.  Too easy.  It's like a chain smoker and their nonchalance of taking a drag.  You take drags on people's emotions.

I see it now.  You drain.  You pull apart and don't allow the moment to allow it to coalesce.  I didn't see it before, but I saw it the other night.  Where you ripped open Gustav's girl with a chuckle.  She was down, she was broken.  But you..."  At this point I knew I was making that face.  It started to hurt.  My eyes were burning as I was getting it all off of my chest.

"...you had to do that snarky little cunt laugh.  She was down, Charlie. She had just caught Gustav kissing that Peruvian exchange student in the bathroom of the flat they shared.  I saw how you pounced on her.  You prowled around the room and saw the best way to hurt her.  You waited for Demi and Crystal to look in your direction.  You had an audience.  You looked at her with that disgusting look and you laughed.  I can only imagine you would do the same if you slid a knife into a old woman's throat."

She grimaced, the little lines coming together slow, like the lines of two opposing trains coming to a stop at the same stop.  Her eyes searched the air.  She looked back at me with the eyes of a child that was found out.  She had nothing to say.

"So?  I'm saying fuck you, Charlie.  Piss off."

With that I turned away, knowing full well I had just flipped the script.  But I meant every word and I walked tall and I never saw her again.  My only regret was to use that face and a tall, taunt finger to her face.

Of course I say that then.

I received the Facebook IM that Charlie was asking for me.  Not about, but for.  It was from Lara.  What chilled was that Lara didn't say anything else.  Charlie's last update was six months ago and the cryptic "I guess this is what I sow."  I stared at that for literally ten minutes, my eyes reading beyond the the dots comprising the message on the screen.

I hated everything I said that day.  I hated that face now.  It was all just so unimportant.  She was asking for me.  The guy that broke up with her that cold Sunday morning at Owl's Head.  I left her stranded there on purpose, knowing she would have to figure out.

"Hey, Charlie.  How u doing?"  There is a reason for banality I say to myself at a phrase I've never said or written in my entire life.

It took three hours to get a reply.  I was at work at that point.

"Doctors therapist they said we need to tlk I'm sorry.  So sorry.  I guess we should talk."

Fuck.  I said a thousand times.  The rest of the day was a blur.  A blur of fucks.

"Yes, Charlie.  Of course.  I'm off at 4.  Wanna meet at 10th Pizza?"

"Cya then"

She's sorry?  I think about slicing a few necks while here at the hospital.  I never felt so low.  Everything that happened with her didn't matter.  She's Charlene Haynes, my ex-girlfriend, and she needs me right now.

...The Necessity of Science Fiction, the Limits of Science Fact...

Collectively, from the late 60s through the 80s and now the millennium, the progression of science promise, science fact and now we are in the era of its ultimate fruition through comprehensive scientific fulfillment.  We have invisibility cloaks, created life from artificial matter, nanobots, hyper-computing, and more each day.  We live in the post-fact era and the limits of science border on superficial constraint.

However, we must never allow the promises of science fiction blur our ability to wield and control science fact.

Science fiction's value has been redeemed from what I heard up through the late 70s - that it is child's play, it has little to no value to hard science.  But, no one can deny the spark of exploration and imagination that has led us to the cusp of fulfillment that we see today.  Science fiction authors were the first explorers - expanding thoughts and working through proofs of wild and extraordinary things - all before the first gantry was built, before the first footfalls on the Moon.  It was they that captured young scientists minds and didn't tell them want not to do, but what could be possible.

There should never be limits to exploration through science fiction.

And, remember that, with many science fiction stories, we must remember the cautionary tales as well.  They are cautionary because they have been thought through.  They are frightening when we do not respect the limits of power, when we continue off frame from the natural laws that are part of the universe, and part of our species.  Can we overcome the natural laws, surely, but, at the same time we must understand them before we proceed.

Science fact can explore, but only if we are responsible, and, I'll dare say it as a part of our culture, moral, about the choices we make.  Here are the top five precepts that we must hold dear to our minds and scientific endeavors:

1: "Habit of Truth" - put down Brownowski or Feynman, the precept is that communication and the endeavor must be widely open and honest.  If there is falsity or making the data follow the purpose toward a personal or political end, than it is not science at all.

1EX: read about germ theory as it pertained to Louis Pasteur or the Hospitallers.  The concept of washing ones hands and/or limiting contamination from one wing to the next seems like a no-brainer today, but it is (sadly) only a modern development (and not everyone is onboarded).  I say habit of truth applies here only in that those that found the studies enlightening were being held back by those that didn't believe it, instead of openly sharing the information and allowing the staff to make up their own minds.

2: "Comprehensive Terminus" - quite simply, never proceed with an experiment where you cannot limit or terminate the progression of a problem.

2EX: there are even small concepts that could literally destroy the world if left unchecked.  Consider germ warfare and its effects if truly left unchecked in the hands of an angry few.  Consider experimentation that can magnify by exponential growth - concepts like machines that can eliminate oxygen or water, nanobots that are set to reproduce and turn all matter it touches into its derivatives.  They sound far fetched, but, imagine an experiment in the hands of a moron.  Even the particle accelerator at CERN has safety measures and sound science in the event of a problem.

3: "Do No Harm" - doctors at one time roundly understood the Hippocratic Oath to mean 'no harm' - it has since been modified to permit harm in outlined circumstances.  That's not a political thought, it is a truth.  My argument here is to return to such a state, eventually, only because of the gross benefit 'no harm' provides.  There are arguments because of over-population, to prevent other suffering, etc. which need to be definitively explored.  But the 'no harm', similar to Asimov's Robot Maxims, are there as a safeguard.

3EX: no need to go further than the genocidal dictators of history and see the 'for the better good' outweighing 'do no harm' - the difference is in millions upon millions of bodies.  From experimentation of live healthy subjects, to mass graves, and more - 'for the better good' does not go far enough'.  I would argue that it is not the ultimate net benefit of society to allow for death, but seek alternatives.

4: "Celebrate Science, Appreciate Viewpoints" - there's been a recent revival of scientific arguments directly against religion.  This is weak sauce, only because the two shouldn't be equated, first and foremost, as one is based in discernible endeavor, while religion is based on perception and feelings.  Arguing directly just makes both sides look foolish, honestly, I don't get the cheering/jeering on in these types of debates.  Religion has been a part of human experience alongside science, with many scientists of the past actually never denying the exist of God.  We can work together and stop the fussing and fighting.

Besides, the basis here is that the scientist should envision and the religious can point out where this could be a potential problem when it runs in opposition of a faith.  Not because it must be done, I only offer it is a good measure.

It is ironic that Star Trek envisions a grand Prime Directive, but we break it with our own species on a constant basis.

4EX: read the recent debates regarding stem cell theories.  I point out they were theories, and, come to find out, there's a lot of other ways to harvest them then in by purposefully killing unborn babies where there are fruitful alternatives (see 3).  This leads into my last point...

5: "Rigorous Debate" - if science becomes a hive mind mentality, then we are truly lost.  The blessing of the scientist versus the zealot, in some ways, if constructive, is that it pushes us to find alternate ways.  That cannot be supplanted but by not having scientists that are kind, but by those that are passionate.  And, the one that yells the loudest shouldn't win because they are loud - I see that all the time and its not the best strike toward the better solution.

5EX: post-apocalyptic movies pretty much delve into this at length.  We ultimately destroy ourselves if we don't have varying viewpoints.  Active debate leads to the catalytic converter, leads to harvest of stem cells from after-birth, leads to the organic movement.  The spectrum toward the best solution is easy: meets objective, is cost-effective, if mutual befitting, is moral, just and measurably improves the state of man, animal and world.

I think 5 is actually the most crucial - if we stop saying 'why are we doing that in that way', we have no where else to go and scientific endeavor is toast.

Haze

Intertwined like gloss on your lips
The crystal hue of your eyes animated in the flashes
Of grey sunlight

The smell
Of soda, dark, in your hair from where
We opened it

It is hyper cherry blast
The sugar is what flew wet into the wheat dark
Near the end, where it meets your neck

I should not smell it
But are there rules?
I look at the china cabinet
That hasn't said a word since I arrived
I bow faceously and return to snack.

...M4BWU...Revisioning A New Hope...04may14...

'Shopped from original photos from 'A New Hope', here are visions of a grittier time, before the gloss and sheen of the prequels.  All should be in a 2880x1800 format, to at least format to larger screens.  I recommend 'stretching' it for your desktop and it will resize according to your monitor.  [Had to tweak this a few times as Blogger has issues with multiple embeds.]  Depending on your browser, you may have to click it first then 'save as...' or, in Explorer, 'Save Target As...'

...M4BWY...The Star Wars Prequels: the Arc that Should Have Been...03MAY14...

Designed to read as each movie's introductory crawl...the arc of the prequels that should have been.  We know that Anakin becomes Vader, we know (partly) of his betrayal...the story given to us is a paint by numbers call back to IV, it must elevate beyond what we know and offer surprises and gravitas.

EPISODE I: The Prophecy Illuminated
CRAWL: "In the darkest shadows of the shining Republic, a slave named Oeast gives birth to Anakin Skywalker.  A prophecy that has lingered in the once dead Sith (ancient disciples dedicated to the principles of the Dark Force), has seen that Anakin will eventually lead them to victory over the Jedi Order.  The Jedi are the proud disciples of the Light Side of the Force, the undeniable energy that permeates the Galaxy and they too have seen this vision.

Led by the ancient, but wise, Yoda, the Jedi have been mobilized through-out the Galaxy in search of Anakin and bring the child under the watchful eye of the Order.

In the non-federated systems of the Fringe, Oeast does her best to keep her child from both factions, but the machinations of war have already begun.  The Sith, needing to use guile in their strategy, began fanning of flames to start war against the waning Republic.

On the planet of Das, Oeast seeks to hide, but attack ships from both the Sith and Jedi converge upon them."

SYNOPSIS: This is a knock-out fight to the death for the ultimate 'ownership' of the child, Anakin, who has undeniable powers of the force.  The Sith see him as the prophetic master to finally crush the Jedi Order, who have been in power for some 2,000 years.  The Jedi see the threat as well, but, because they are soft with the lack of struggle, they only halfheartedly begin the fight with an enemy they misunderstand.

Yoda sends Arnaul Vidyn, Jedi Master, and his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi, to the planet of Das to secure the child, but, the entire weight of the Sith Empire, once thought to be extinct, come upon them, dozens to one.  "The Jedi have lived far too long in the confines of their vanity.  And, the Republic!  It is nothing but a mirror of the gluttonous and ravenous Order that only seeks peace where peace seeks to suit them and their pockets.  And all of you here are nothing but their handmaidens and their chattel!  You have forgotten the promises of your fathers before you and live in the ruins and have nothing to fill your bellies but sorrow and defeat.  Rise again!  Rise along with the Sith!  They are not the childish horror stories of your youth: they are the promise of a tomorrow where you can be proud to stand on your own feet and say that you are truly free!"

Meanwhile, the Sith run, in tandem, the efforts to bend the Fringe systems to a great war with the Republic, sparking a debate within the Senate as to freedom among the non-federated states and those seeking independence from the 'tyranny' of the Republic.  As the Jedi become engrossed in other matters, and distracted over Anakin, they miss the opportunity to stop this before it begins.

There is a great battle across the systems in the Fringe, where Oeast is killed, clutching her poor child.  The Jedi are victorious at the end of the story.  However, Yoda reaches out with the Force and sees that the prophecy is indeed true.  Yoda believes there may be a way to sullen the child without resorting to killing him.

EPISODE II:  Stalemate
CRAWL: "Anakin Skywalker, child subject of the Jedi Order, has become a backdrop to the crisis that surrounds the Republic.  With his mentor, Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin is an attentive pupil to both Kenobi and Jedi Master Agostin, but the child is lacking the basic tenants of the Force, striking out at the Order with growing frequency.

The Republic, led by Arin Mil'anor and the weight of the Senate, mobilize themselves against the threat of open military actions led, in secret, by the Sith Empire and their Vizier, Phyvius.  The Jedi Order is called into action to lead the assaults against the non-federated systems - but their lack of initiative is being questioned.

The Sith run a campaign against the Jedi and the 'Old' Republic, casting them as tyrannical leaders with questionable conduct in the war they have 'chosen' to wage against them.  Systems become increasingly attuned to the Dark Forces.

Meanwhile, Phyvius runs a third prong against the Light, seeking decisive weapons from illegal weapons manufacturers, the Hutts of Tatooine.  Bounty hunters are sought to ensure that the exotic weapons are kept away from the Republican Army until the time is come."

SYNOPSIS: Anakin has been taken deep within the halls of the Core Worlds for Jedi training with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Agostin.  Despite the young age of the child, he is highly attuned to the Force, but Obi-Wan detects that it is not the Force of Light.  Agostin however, is an optimist and continues to seek more and more advanced training to the child, who pulls it in like a collapsed star.

It is in one of these sessions that Anakin sees a vision of Phyvius, who tells him the prophecy and the twists the death of his mother as the attempt to kill him by the Jedi.  "The Jedi wanted to kill you as well, Anakin, but they are crippled with guilt and petty hand wringing in their twisted tenants.  You see it as well: their 'Light' is questioned in their hears on a daily basis.  It is not the basis of faith, but weakness.  You are strong...so strong.  Strike out with the full weight of your Force, the Dark strength that flows in you now.  You should be released, not confined."  Anakin then kills Agostin while alone.  Obi-Wan suspects him but cannot prove it.  Anakin then makes a decision to kill Yoda but binds his intention until the time is right.

Yoda is provided a vision, deducing two of the three prongs of the Sith strategy.  He sends his best Jedi and defeats a few of the non-federated systems and offers them peace.  The exotic weapons turn out to be clones, generated from the worst of the Sith, to fight as equals to the Jedi, who find themselves, in many millennia, having to fight to stay alive, fight to stay relevant.

Palpatine, a Vizier and Dark Disciple, grows in political power in direct opposition to the Republic systems and the Senate.  He never fails in his ability to outmaneuver the stymied politicos.

In the throes of the war, Anakin attempts to kill Yoda to win a decisive victory, but Obi-Wan senses this before it happen.  Phyvius and his upstart pupil are on hand to obtain Anakin, Yoda and Obi-Wan fight tooth and nail, only to see Anakin in the hands of the Sith.  It comes at a price for the Dark Side, who have to struggle to re-build their resources.  But in the end Phyvius is hopeful for the Sith's future - they have Palpatine, Skywalker and their clones to a(n unsure) victory.

EPISODE III:  The Fall of Order
CRAWL: "The Republic is in turmoil.  Even the most loyal to the cause of peace are questioning the Galactic Leader, Arin Mil'anor, and his ability to hold together the fabric of unity.  The Jedi commanders are losing system after system, stemming not only from the subversive tactics of the Sith, but their ability to undermine the promises of stability from the Galactic Senate.  Hope appears to fade in the last light of the Jedi Order, where the last crucial decisions of Master Yoda and the Jedi Knight Obi Wan Kenobi guide the remainder of fighters to dubious victory.

Poised to strike, the Sith have successfully placed General Anakin Skywalker and Chancellor Palpatine as outspoken leaders of the non-federated systems, calling out for justice and order in a universe that is fast moving toward chaos.  Skywalker continues to win battles against separatist forces, and Palpatine has brought federation to systems where none have existed before, earning the trust and resources of their people.

Meanwhile, the rest of the galaxy is seeing the destruction of 2,000 years of peace dissolve before their eyes.
Now, Jedi forces seek to control one of the last, key systems in the Outer Fringe from the Sith, while the children of Amidala Sashir, sired by the criminal acts of Skywalker, request asylum.  In the darkness, the growing triumph of the Sith amass a force to take on the core systems of the once stable Republic."

SYNOPSIS: The finality and triumph of the Sith is seen in the final acts of the movie.  System after system falter and eventual either: fall to the Sith, or, fall into chaos and destruction.  With no real foundation to stand upon, Arin Mil'anor is eventually forced out of office, and Chancellor Palpatine resumes control of the withering Republic, replacing it with Imperial Order.  Anakin is cheered to the Halls of the Senate after a decisive battle against what is perceived as the Jedi maneuvering to manipulate the system of Chrysalis.  This fully discredits Yoda and Obi-Wan, who with the mother of Luke and Leia Skywalker, are forced into hiding.

In the halls of the Senate, where Palpatine sends away all those that opposed him, he says "Let it be recorded that those that oppose the ultimate unity and order that the Imperial Code represents, will suffer along with their people.  We are willingly and irrefutably sent here, to Coruscant, to the very head of the known systems, to once again unify that which was tattered.  We were cheered by the peoples of right-thinking systems to sit here and ensure a quick resolution to this conflict and assure the purpose of peace."

The Jedi are not only shamed by openly hunted by Sith and bounty hunters through-out the Galaxy, the Order is lost.  The last remnants of the Republic, crippled because they never made preparations for war, find themselves in need of the resources to fight once again.

Anakin and Palpatine now seek the last revenge against their enemies in the Senate, their systems, the Jedi and, to conclude their plans, even the warriors of the Sith.

Amidala is killed where Obi-Wan could do nothing to stop it, instead making the decision to hide the twins from their tyrannical father.  In the fight, Obi-Wan not only defeats Anakin, but suffers him a lethal blow.  Anakin is held together by the power of the Dark Side, but chooses to stay alive and to wipe away as much of his humanity to better fight the ongoing struggle of Order against Chaos and takes on the moniker Darth Vader.

We see a galaxy torn asunder by evil and no footing for the good.  Technology falls into disrepair and the Rebellion takes its first steps in infancy to rise up where they could not win before.
